How Much Mulch Do I Need? Calculator and Coverage Guide
Buying too little mulch means a second trip to the store; buying too much wastes money. Here's the exact math to get it right the first time.
Mulch needed in cubic yards = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27. For 100 square feet at the standard 3-inch depth, you need approximately 0.93 cubic yards, or about 13 bags of standard 2-cubic-foot bagged mulch.

The Mulch Calculation Formula
Cubic Yards = (Area × Depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27
This converts your garden bed's square footage and desired depth into cubic yards, the standard unit bulk mulch is sold in.
How Deep Should Mulch Be?
Most garden beds need 2-3 inches of mulch depth. Less than 2 inches doesn't effectively suppress weeds. More than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots and trap excess moisture against stems, increasing rot risk.
Bulk vs Bagged Mulch
Bulk mulch (sold by the cubic yard) is almost always cheaper for larger projects — typically anything over 0.5 cubic yards. Bagged mulch (usually 2 cubic feet per bag) offers convenience for small areas without delivery minimums.
Quick Conversion Reference
- 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
- 1 standard bag = 2 cubic feet
- 1 cubic yard ≈ 13.5 bags
Worked Example
A 20×10 ft garden bed at 3 inches depth:
Cubic feet = 200 × 0.25 = 50 cu ft
Cubic yards = 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards
Bags needed = 50 ÷ 2 = 25 bags
