How to Calculate a Discount

There are three common discount calculations shoppers need:

1. Sale price from % off: Sale Price = Original × (1 − Discount%/100)

2. Percent off from two prices: Discount% = (Original − Sale) / Original × 100

3. Original price from sale price: Original = Sale / (1 − Discount%/100)

Frequently Asked Questions

20% off $85 = $68. The discount amount is $17 ($85 × 0.20), and the sale price is $85 − $17 = $68.
Percent off = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100. If an item was $80 and is now $56, percent off = ($80 − $56) ÷ $80 × 100 = 30% off.
30% off $150 = $105. Discount amount = $45 ($150 × 0.30), sale price = $150 − $45 = $105.
Original price = Sale price ÷ (1 − discount%). If a sale price is $63 after 30% off, original = $63 ÷ 0.70 = $90.
