How Ideal Weight Is Calculated

There is no single "ideal" weight — different medical formulas produce different estimates. This calculator shows results from all four major formulas, with the average used as your ideal range.

All formulas use 5 feet as a baseline and add a fixed amount per inch above that. For example, the Devine formula adds 2.3 kg (5.1 lbs) per inch above 5 feet for men, and 2.3 kg per inch for women starting from a different baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Using the Devine formula, ideal weight for a 5'10" male is approximately 166 lbs (75.2 kg). Using the BMI healthy range of 18.5–24.9, the range is 129–173 lbs. Most formulas agree on roughly 160–170 lbs for this height.
Traditional ideal weight formulas don't account for muscle mass. An athlete or bodybuilder may weigh significantly more than "ideal" but have low body fat and excellent health. Body composition (body fat %) is a more meaningful measure for athletic individuals.
For a 5'4" female, the Devine formula gives approximately 120 lbs. The healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) corresponds to about 107–144 lbs. Most formulas suggest 115–135 lbs as a healthy range for this height.
